GSM-IGM Flagship on Disaster Risk Reduction Workshop on Landslide and Karst Susceptibility Assessment

Time: 8.00 am – 5.00 pm
Date: 1 March 2018
Venue: Pulse Grande Hotel (former Shangri-la Hotel), Putrajaya, Malaysia

The Geological Society of Malaysia and Institute of Geology Malaysia jointly established the GSM-IGM Flagship on Geoscience to Action for Disaster Risk Reduction (G2A4DRR) in 2015 to serve as a catalyst to incubate and market potential geoscience technology, tools and services that is relevant to address the risks of hazards. The Flagship aims to promote programmes on capacity building and professional development to be delivered in Malaysia initially and Southeast Asia in the long term. The G2A4DRR is helmed by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Initiative (SEADPRI-UKM) and University of Malaya’s Geology Department, with support from the Newton Ungku Omar Fund administered by the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT).

The Workshop on Landslide and Karst Susceptibility Assessmentwill be held on 1 March 2018 at Pulse Grande Hotel (former Shangri-la Hotel), Putrajaya, Malaysia. Conducted primarily by geologists from the British Geological Survey, the workshop aims to inform and explore the processes that cause landslide/slope instability and karstic hazards in Kuala Lumpur; using the experience and methodologies applied in the other countries including the UK. Processes and methodologies developed by the British Geological Survey to define and assess the susceptibility of landslide and karstic hazards in the UK and in other countries will be introduced.

The G2A4DRR has secured a total of 10 seats for Members of GSM and IGM,respectively. The organisers will seek to get the event recognised by the Board of Geologists so that participants that attend the full event can obtain CPD points.

Registration is free of charge on a first-come-first served basis, with a deadline of 26 February 2018. Kindly respond to geologicalsociety@gmail.com OR contact Ms. Anna Lee at 03-79577036.
