This event is to commemorate our world class geologist upon his 38-years of service and upcoming retirement after long serving to the society. He has been contributing significantly to the profesional development, capacity building, research and innovation including Malaysia.

Professor Chigira is the member of Science Council of Japan, the executive board of Japan Landslide Society, Japan Society of Engineering Geology, and was the president of the Japan Society for Engineering Geology. With 16 years experience in the industry and 22 years in the academic world, so much we could learn/re-learn and deepen our understanding.

For your information, he is currently a visiting professor to Disaster Risk Management (DRM) program offered by Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur, in which DRM program is highly supported by Japanese University Consortium (JUC) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He is also an international fellow to SEADPRI UKM since 2000 and quite active in the publication related to geology and geohazards in Malaysia.

As a world expert in the mountain geohazard, Professor Chigira will be leading the scientific expedition to Mount Kinabalu to be held on 27-28 February, as one of remarkable programs in conjunction to the Science and Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction (STDRR) Week 2019 in Kundasang, Sabah. He will be providing substantial input to the Workshop on Future Geohazard Research 2020-2030 which will be organized on 02 March 2019 in Kundasang Sabah.
