Geoheritage and Geopark Working Group

Aims

The initiative aims to advance understanding of geoheritage and geoparks through knowledge development, interdisciplinary research, field investigation, workshops, and targeted training programmes for academics, practitioners, and relevant agencies.

It serves as a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, fostering strong linkages between geoscientists, policymakers, industry players, and local communities at both regional and national levels, through online engagement as well as physical activities.

Aligned with the geopark philosophy, this initiative promotes the sustainable utilisation of geological heritage in close integration with the area’s natural and cultural heritage. It seeks to enhance public awareness and understanding of critical societal challenges, including:
• Sustainable use of Earth’s resources
• Climate change mitigation and adaptation
• Reduction of natural hazard–related risks

A core objective is to raise public awareness of the importance of geological heritage in shaping history and society, while instilling a sense of pride among local communities and strengthening their identity and connection with their region.

The programme also provides high-quality training to support conservation efforts and to promote knowledge-based tourism through geotourism. By encouraging local entrepreneurship and creating new employment opportunities, it contributes to regional economic development while ensuring that geological resources are effectively protected and conserved.
