Abstract: Discontinuity survey has been conducted on rock slopes along the East-West Highway. This survey carried out scan line technique and taken into accounts parameters such as type, spacing, orientation, length, aperture, infilling, surface roughness of the discontinuity and the water conditions in the discontinuity plane. The length of discontinuity was described in more details by considering their exposure and degree of persistence in the outcrop. The shape and size of the rock blocks parameters were also considered in order to describe the relative density of the discontinuity in the rock mass.

The data obtained from the discontinuity survey were then used to evaluate the Rock Quality Designation (RQD). The results showed that the studied rock masses have a RQD value around 65% – 85%. The stereographic plots of the discontinuities revealed that most of the rock slopes has a potential to fail either in a mode of wedge, plane, and toppling failure, or a combination of more than one mode of failure. The Markland Test concept can be used to identify the critical discontinuity plane and eventually forecasting the potential of rock slope failure.
